Baba Mandir Sikkim: History, How to Reach, Permit & Visiting Tips

kashmir kerela

Baba Mandir is one of the most talked-about stops on the Gangtok–Nathula road. This small shrine honours Baba Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier whose story has become part of Sikkim’s border folklore. Here is what to know before you go: the story, how to get there, what to expect at altitude and how to fit it into your Sikkim trip.

Who Was Baba Harbhajan Singh?

Harbhajan Singh was a soldier of the Indian Army who died in 1968 in the Nathu La area of East Sikkim. Soldiers and locals believe his spirit still watches over the border, and many stories describe him warning troops of danger. The Army and local people treat the shrine with deep respect, so you will often see soldiers and visiting families paying their respects. Treat the stories as local belief and tradition, and visit in the same respectful spirit.

Where Is Baba Mandir?

Baba Mandir lies on the road from Gangtok towards Nathula in East Sikkim, at an altitude of roughly 4,000 metres, which is higher than Tsomgo Lake. Most visitors reach it by private or shared cab from Gangtok on a full-day excursion, usually combined with Tsomgo Lake. Drive times depend on weather and road conditions, so start early.

Permits and Rules

This route runs through a sensitive border area, so a permit is needed and the rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals. Rules and open days can change at short notice. Read our guides to the Sikkim permit for tourists and the Nathula Pass permit, and carry valid photo ID. Photography and conduct near military areas must follow the instructions of the Army personnel on site.

What to Expect at the Shrine

  • A small, quiet shrine in a cold, open, mountain setting, often with mist or snow in winter
  • Visitors pay respects and many stop for a short rest
  • Limited facilities, so carry water, snacks and warm clothes
  • Weather can change fast, and the road may close in heavy snow

Tips for a Comfortable Visit

  • Start early: mornings are clearer and traffic is lighter.
  • Dress in layers: it is much colder here than in Gangtok, even in summer.
  • Watch for altitude sickness: go slowly, drink water, and tell your driver if you feel dizzy or breathless.
  • Check road status: snow and landslides can close the route, especially from December to February. See our Sikkim in winter guide.
  • Be respectful: keep noise low and follow local customs.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn usually give the clearest views and the most reliable road access. Winter brings snow but also closures. Our best time to visit Sikkim guide helps you choose your month.

Plan It With Your Gangtok Trip
